Workshops
I lead workshops in schools, colleges and universities, as well as online masterclasses, to share techniques of immersive theatre practice with drama students, teachers or professionals.
In particular I like to look at:
Performance in immersive environments.
Adapting source materials - how to expand a story into a whole world.
Responding to a space - using the particularities of a given location to devise unconventional theatre.
Crafting a one-to-one encounter - how to engage directly with audience members and create material to be performed for a single person at a time.
Testimonials
Jon Lee, Course Leader, BA Acting and Performance, London South Bank University
Sam’s workshop was a fantastic experience for everyone. He is a very engaging and dynamic facilitator whose vast knowledge and experience in both devising and performing meant that everyone came away inspired with new techniques and experiences.
In the three hours of his immersive theatre workshop, he broadened the students’ understanding of the genre: from ideas on how to collaborate with the space itself, to the dramaturgy of proximity during one-to-one performances. The students were left on a real high and engaging in discussions about how they can apply the experiences of the workshop to their own work. They had been struggling with fully getting their heads around the idea of putting the audience’s experience at the centre of their work, but the level of detail Sam worked at has really helped.
Ian Morgan, Course Leader MA Theatre Lab, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
I met Sam Booth in 2019 through his work on that year’s final production for the MA Theatre Lab programme at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. I was impressed by the quality of support he offered our students during this time.
Apart from demonstrating a high level of professionalism in his creative role as dramaturg with the company, his empathy and knowledge was abundantly present in rehearsal through rich, pertinent observations offered at the right time. I remember Sam’s work as being pivotal in supporting the director and the students in the production’s success.
